The Technical & Design Bits

As sound supervisor at McCarter, I worked with Elisabeth the sound designer and the house sound team as well as the music team led by Ari Asfar, composer, and Sujin-Kim Ramsey our Music Director. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special shout out to Matt Callahan, The music supervisor and corraler of musical cats and my counterpart in trying to get all of the pieces of scattered dreams and wishes under budget and within the crew schedule.

The most important piece of gear on this show by far was the drum booth designed by our Technical Director Alex Bergeron. Rather than a simple acrylic shield we elected to build an enclosed booth to contain the drummer complete with air gapped double walls and A/C. I claim it to be the best traveling drum booth on the east coast. Each panel latches together and the insulation and acoustic dampening we got was nothing short of miraculous. Amazing what happens when we follow the physics.

The other important bit of kit we used was the D&B DS100 signal engine. Creating a fully immersive soundscape to place our musical elements around the stage and room to create a sometimes disorienting swirl of sonic tomfoolery.
